How Duolingo Embracing AI Has Impacted Jobs and Language Learning

Duolingo, the popular language-learning platform, recently turned to artificial intelligence (AI) for content production and translations, resulting in a 10% reduction in its contractor workforce at the close of 2023. Their decision to leverage AI, specifically GPT-4, for content production and translations has raised questions about the future of job roles, particularly those centered around language-based tasks.

A company spokesperson clarified that the use of GPT-4 involves translating sentences, with human experts validating the output for quality and adherence to language proficiency standards. Duolingo not only employs GPT-4 for translations but also incorporates it into its premium subscription tier, Duolingo Max, offering AI-generated feedback and a chatbot for conversation practice. The platform also utilizes its proprietary AI model, “Birdbrain,” for personalized lesson content.

While Duolingo refrains from terming the workforce reduction as “layoffs,” the departure of a “small minority” of contractors is attributed to the completion of projects or operational improvements that require fewer personnel. The company acknowledged that advancements in AI technology played a role in the reduced need for human involvement.

Both contractors and Duolingo users expressed concern and disappointment over the job cuts, adding to the growing apprehension that AI may replace human workers. Contractors, who often face job insecurity, find this transition particularly challenging. Users worry about the potential devaluation of language learning, fearing that AI translations may lack the depth of understanding provided by human experts in languages, idioms, and cultural nuances.
