WhatsApp’s New Updates Include Third Party Chat Support

As the Digital Markets Act (DMA) deadline looms closer, WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce significant updates to its messaging platform, marking a shift toward interoperability with other chat apps.

In a recent interview with Wired, Dick Brouwer, an engineering director at WhatsApp, discussed the company’s plans to offer interoperability while maintaining its commitment to privacy, security, and integrity. With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp aims to strike a balance between opening its platform to third-party messaging networks and safeguarding user data.

Brouwer emphasized the importance of user control, stating that individuals will have the choice to participate in third-party messaging exchanges. This approach seeks to mitigate potential privacy and security concerns associated with interoperability. Companies seeking to integrate with Meta’s system must sign agreements, although specific details remain undisclosed.

While WhatsApp insists on end-to-end encryption to enable interoperability, recent developments in the tech industry, such as Apple’s App Store changes, suggest potential complexities in negotiation. Nonetheless, collaborative efforts with open-source messaging protocol Matrix indicate progress toward maintaining encryption integrity.

The prospect of interoperability raises questions about feature parity and potential privacy issues. Brouwer acknowledged that achieving seamless integration between third-party and native WhatsApp chats may present challenges, underscoring the need for robust privacy measures.
