WhatsApp Introduces Disappearing Voice Messages for Added Privacy

In a notable update, Meta’s messaging app, WhatsApp, is rolling out a new feature that enhances the privacy and security of user conversations — disappearing voice messages.

Similar to the “View Once” option for photos and videos introduced in 2021, this new feature allows users to send voice messages that can only be listened to once before they disappear. The primary goal is to bring added security to conversations where users prefer not to have information retained digitally. This feature proves particularly useful when sharing sensitive information, such as credit card numbers for one-time use or planning surprise events.

The disappearing voice messages will be prominently marked with a “one-time” icon, indicating to the recipient that they can only listen to the message once before it vanishes. This visual cue ensures that users are aware of the temporary nature of the content, preventing unintended plays in inappropriate settings. Additionally, WhatsApp emphasizes that these messages, like “View Once” photos and videos, are protected with end-to-end encryption by default.

Meta’s commitment to privacy and security is reflected in the ongoing updates to its social platforms. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s 2019 vision for the company included promises related to safety, private interactions, interoperability, and encryption. While there have been adjustments, such as discontinuing cross-messaging across Instagram and Facebook, the company has delivered on certain encryption promises.

WhatsApp’s new View Once feature for voice messages is set to roll out globally this month. Users may not immediately see the option in their app, but the update is expected to become available soon, providing an extra layer of privacy for their conversations.
